Which whole bean coffee for a bean-to-cup machine

An automatic machine grinds and brews in a few seconds, so very light roasts often come out sour and thin. A medium to medium-dark roast with notes of chocolate, nuts and caramel does much better.

Avoid very dark, shiny, oily beans: the oil clogs the grinder and the taste tends to be bitter rather than full.

Why freshly roasted whole beans

Whole beans keep their aroma far longer than ground coffee. The roast date is on every bag. Coffee tastes best in the first weeks after roasting; keep it in a closed bag, dry and dark, not in the fridge.

Tips for better coffee from your machine

  • If the coffee is thin or sour, set the grinder one step finer.
  • If it is bitter, try a coarser grind or a smaller dose.
  • Clean the brewing unit and descale regularly; it changes the taste more than you would expect.

These coffees also suit espresso and the moka pot.

Frequently asked questions

Which whole bean coffee is best for an automatic machine?

A medium to medium-dark roast with a full body, chocolate notes and low acidity. Very light roasts tend to taste sour in a machine; very dark, oily beans clog the grinder.

Can I use specialty coffee in a bean-to-cup machine?

Yes. Specialty coffee tastes much better than standard coffee in a machine; just choose a medium to medium-dark roast.

Which roast is best for an automatic coffee machine?

Medium to medium-dark. The coffee has a full body, chocolate flavour and low acidity, and it goes well with milk.

How do I set the grind size on my machine?

Start in the middle of the scale. If the coffee runs fast and tastes sour or thin, go one step finer; if it is bitter, go coarser. Only adjust the grinder while it is running.

Why does coffee from my machine taste sour?

Usually because the roast is too light or the grind too coarse. Try a finer grind or a darker, low-acid coffee.

How long does whole bean coffee keep after opening?

It is best in the first weeks after roasting. Keep it in a closed bag, dry and dark, not in the fridge.

How many cups does 1 kg of coffee make?

At 7 to 10 grams per espresso, roughly 100 to 140 cups.
